PUR solutions play an important role in the wind energy industry, where low weight, high strength and long service life are essential. At Dan-iso, we develop dimensionally stable PUR/PIR parts for lightweight cores, shaped parts and technical installations that must be stable throughout both production and operation. The material provides precise geometry, high strength and stable performance in projects where even small changes in weight affect aerodynamics and loads.
Where is polyurethane used in wind projects?
PUR is used in areas where the material must be light, dimensionally stable and stable over time. It is used in lightweight cores and support components that help maintain geometry in production. It is included in items that support casting processes where precision and rigidity are crucial. It is also used in technical installations in nacelle and tower, where components need stability, low weight and a material that does not deform under changing temperatures and vibrations.
Why is polyurethane suitable for these areas?
PUR combines low density with high strength, providing the robustness needed in projects with high rotation speeds, varying loads and exposed environmental conditions. The material is easy to shape and process, making it ideal for custom geometric parts. PUR is minimally affected by moisture and temperature fluctuations, and its dimensional stability means that the parts retain their shape and properties during long-term use – even in harsh offshore environments.
Low weight and high strength
In designs where even small weight differences affect aerodynamics, rotation and loading, PUR offers the opportunity to create lightweight components with impressive strength. The combination of low mass and high stiffness makes it an obvious material in projects where components are exposed to high mechanical loads throughout the wing or in the nacelle.
Stable operation and long service life
PUR retains its shape and insulating properties throughout the life of the material. This provides stable and predictable performance, which is important in an environment where components operate under constant vibration, high speeds and changing temperatures. The dimensionally stable structure contributes to long durability and reduced maintenance in demanding wind environments.
Practical benefits for wind projects
- Reduces weight without loss of strength in thin-walled structures.
- Ensures stable shape and geometry during casting and machining.
- Resists moisture, vibrations and temperature fluctuations.
- Provides consistent results in harsh offshore environments.
- Can be incorporated into circular solutions via recycled PUR (Dan‑isoRECY)
Example from a project in the wind industry
In a recent development project at a major player in the wind industry, work was done to optimize strength and weight in one of the outermost sections of the blade. This area was particularly challenging because the construction had to be extremely light, but at the same time strong enough to withstand high rotation speeds and severe weather conditions. In collaboration with the company's engineers, PUR was chosen as the core and support material in selected geometries. The solution made it possible to significantly reduce weight without compromising strength, and the material's dimensional stability made it easier to maintain precise geometry throughout the molding process.PUR was also used in smaller auxiliary components during production, where the material served as a light, precise and easily machined support piece. This resulted in a more stable process, fewer adjustments and better quality in the finished piece. The project showed that PUR can play a role as a lightweight and strong material in particularly exposed areas, and that mechanically recycled PUR can be incorporated into smaller technical components without compromising functionality. For the company, it contributed both to strength improvements and to the work on more sustainable material choices.
